Paediatric Immediate Life Support
Recertification Course
General information
Learning outcomes
The PILS Recertification course is designed to refresh the theory and practical skills of ABCDE clinical assessment required by healthcare professionals to recognise seriously ill children and initiate appropriate interventions to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest. The immediate management of the child in cardiorespiratory arrest is also revised.
Eligibilty
Only candidates who have previously successfully completed the PILS course, and are within one year of the expiry date on their PILS certificate, can attend a PILS Recertification course. Candidates for whom more than one year has elapsed since their initial PILS course are not eligible to attend the Recertification course.
In addition, EPLS Providers who hold a current EPLS certificate may obtain PILS certification by attending a PILS Recertification course.
Pre-course preparation
The standard course lasts 2 hours and comprises of:
Interactive lecture; ABCDE assessment and the paediatric ALS
algorithm
Optional Demonstration of ABCDE clinical assessment
Simulation practices with continuous assessment
Candidates must have a current PILS manual. The PILS re-certification DVD, assessment forms and course details (including manual if required) must be sent to the candidates at least two weeks before the re-certification course date.
Assessment
Continuous assessment is undertaken throughout the course, utilising the BLS and Airway assessment forms.
