* Advanced Life Support Recertification Course
      General information

Objective

The ALS re-certification course is designed to refresh the theory and practical skills required by senior members of a multi-disciplinary team to manage peri-arrest situations and to treat the patient until transfer to a critical care area. The complexity and management of cardiac arrest situations, including decision making and effective communication with the team is included.

Eligibility

Only those candidates who hold a valid ALS Provider certificate are eligible to attend the one day re-certification course. Certificates are valid for 4 years. It is not recommended that candidates attend a recertification course if more than one year has elapsed since the expiry date of their Provider certificate. The one day re-certification course is not able to make recommendations of Instructor Potential and this should be made clear to the candidates prior to the course.

As with the full ALS Provider Course, all course participants must come from a clinical or educational healthcare environment.

Pre-course preparation

This course lasts for one day and consists of an update lecture and practical stations and assessments. Candidates must have a current ALS manual. Course material (and manual if required) will be forwarded one month prior to the course and the candidate is advised to study the manual thoroughly before completing a pre-course multiple choice paper, which must be handed in with the question paper on arrival. The pre-course test does not form part of the final assessment and should be completed without reference to the manual. Competence in CPR is expected. Participants are advised to practice CPR before the course.

Course format:
Lecture

Assessment

At the end of the day, theoretical knowledge is assessed by means of a multiple choice question paper. Practical skills assessed include: airway management, initial assessment and resuscitation and scenarios that allow the candidate to effectively demonstrate core competencies.
