Andy Swain was a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and in the early days of the RC (UK), he played a key role in constructing and supervising the development of the ALS course. His high standards played a major role in the RC (UK) ALS course becoming so well respected. Andy also chaired the first ALS Subcommittee at a time when resuscitation teaching was in its infancy. He devoted an enormous amount of his time and effort to the ALS course and helped lay the foundations for the future, both nationally and throughout Europe. Andy now lives and works in New Zealand, but is still very active in the field of resuscitation, having been the Chair of the New Zealand Resuscitation Council for many years. He continues to practice, teach and research in the field.
