What if someone next to you in the crowd, or your mate watching with you at home, suddenly had a cardiac arrest?
Knowing CPR means you’ll have the skills and confidence to step in when it matters most. By learning today, you can help protect the people who share the game you love.
1. Shout for help, and shake the person gently.
2. Look and listen for signs of normal breathing.
3. Call 999 on loudspeaker and tell them the person isn’t breathing. The ambulance call handler will tell you where the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED) is. If someone is with you, ask them to fetch it and bring it back.
4. Interlock your fingers and start chest compressions twice per second. Don’t stop.
5. If a defibrillator arrives, switch it on and follow the instructions.
6. Continue CPR until:
- the AED asks you to pause while it reanalyses and gives another shock if needed
- a paramedic arrives and tells you what to do
- the person shows signs of life.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) works to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac deaths by developing heart screening programmes and funding medical research. CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families.
London Ambulance Charity (LAC) is the official registered NHS charity raising funds to support the busiest ambulance service in the UK, the London Ambulance Service (LAS). LAC improves the healthcare and resilience of London communities and enhance the health and wellbeing of the people working and volunteering for LAS.
