A new bespoke Advanced Life Support course has been developed to reflect the realities of managing cardiac arrest outside hospital.
The Out-of-Hospital Advanced Life Support (OH‑ALS) course, created and quality assured by Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK), is specifically designed for pre‑hospital clinicians working in high‑pressure, unpredictable environments. Each year, approximately 40,000 cardiac arrests occur in the community.
Prehospital clinicians often work in unfamiliar environments, with limited exposure and complex decision-making requirements. Existing training does not always reflect these realities.
OH‑ALS addresses this critical gap with training tailored to the prehospital context, while remaining aligned with RCUK ALS learning objectives. The course supports healthcare professionals who require ALS skills as part of their clinical role, as well as those who teach these skills, helping to build confidence, competence and consistency in cardiac arrest management.
