Senior Lecturer and Honorary Nurse Consultant in Critical Care Outreach
Dr Duncan Smith is a Registered Nurse, Senior Lecturer at City St George’s, University of London, and Honorary Consultant Nurse in Critical Care Outreach at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He has worked in critical care outreach and the recognition and response to clinical deterioration since 2010, combining clinical practice with education and research. Duncan is an experienced resuscitation educator and is particularly involved in instructor development. He is an educator on the Resuscitation Council UK Generic Instructor Course (GIC), supporting the development of clinicians as effective, learner-centred resuscitation instructors. He also teaches on Advanced Life Support courses and has a strong interest in simulation, feedback, debriefing and faculty development. He is a member of the Resuscitation Council UK Education Subcommittee, where he contributes to work supporting high-quality, evidence-based resuscitation education and the development of instructors across the UK. Duncan’s research focuses on improving the recognition and response to clinical deterioration, with particular interests in clinical decision-making, behaviour change, implementation science and patient safety. He completed his PhD through an NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship and continues to lead and contribute to research aimed at improving care for deteriorating patients.
