Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine registrar

Adam is an anaesthetics and intensive care medicine doctor based in the West Midlands. He serves as Vice-Chair of the Early Careers Forum and is a member of the EPALS Subcommittee. Adam completed a PhD in resuscitation at the University of Warwick and continues to contribute to resuscitation science as a member of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR).

Paramedic Team Leader

Angela is a registered nurse and paramedic with over 25 years’ healthcare experience. She started her nursing career on the regional Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. After working there for over 16 years, she left her post as a Sister to retrain as a paramedic and now works as a Team Leader for the East of England Ambulance Service. Angela has a longstanding interest in resuscitation and became an EPALS Instructor in 2013. She joined the EPALS Subcommittee in 2021, bringing experience of resuscitation in both hospital and out-of-hospital settings. She is also a GIC, ALS and OH-ALS Instructor and is a Course Director for EPALS, ALS and OH-ALS. She has completed a PGCert in Emergency and Resuscitation Medicine and is nearing completion of an MSc in Advanced Paramedic Practice (Emergency and Critical Care).

Anaesthetist

Ben is an anaesthetist and air ambulance doctor with Magpas Air Ambulance. His clinical and academic interest is applying a scientific approach to resuscitation in both adults and children. Ben completed most of his anaesthesia training at the Royal London Hospital, which is a busy major trauma centre, as well as completing a paediatric critical care transfer fellowship with PaNDR.

Resuscitation service manager

Bill has worked in healthcare since 1989, beginning his career in the ambulance service before moving into the hospital setting to train as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP). During Bill's clinical career, he has developed specialist interests in paediatrics, resuscitation, and critical care. In 2007, he moved into the role of Resuscitation Officer and has since progressed to managing the service. He has also served within the military and contributed to the development of RCUK courses delivered through the Defence Medical Academy. This experience provided valuable insight into adapting resuscitation education for diverse clinical environments and learner groups. Bill has been an RCUK Instructor for almost 20 years, initially teaching on ALS before expanding to EPALS and NLS. Throughout this time, Bill has worked closely with RCUK on a variety of projects, including educational videos, course development initiatives, and the creation of new learning programmes. As a member of the EPALS Subcommittee, Bill provides the perspective of a practising Resuscitation Officer, ensuring that course content remains relevant, practical, and aligned with the needs of healthcare professionals. The role also provides an opportunity to contribute to high-level discussions on emerging topics in resuscitation practice and education, while supporting the development of new courses and the ongoing review and enhancement of existing materials.

Anaesthetist

Dr David Reicher is a consultant in paediatric and adult anaesthesia at St Mary’s hospital in London. His clinical interests include major trauma and resuscitation.

Paediatric Resuscitation Service Lead

Gareth Lumb is the Paediatric Resuscitation Service Manager at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He is an Instructor for EPALS, ALS and GIC, and serves as Course Director for both EPALS and GIC courses in Leeds. As the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) PILS Subcommittee Lead, Gareth provides dedicated oversight of the PILS programme and coordinates the development of future course changes. He contributed to the 2025 guideline review process and maintains a strong interest in clinical education, curriculum development and course design.

Paediatric Emergency Consultant

Ian Maconochie works as Paediatric Emergency Consultant at St Mary’s Hospital, setting up the department in 2000. He instigated the setting up of the Association of Paediatric Emergency Medicine for the UK and Ireland (APEM), and training for the UK and European curricula for paediatric emergency training and is past President of the Research arm of APEM, and for the Paediatric Emergency Research Network UK and Ireland. He was awarded Professor of Practice, in Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Imperial College, London, the first of its kind in United Kingdom in 2018. He has authored over 300 peer reviewed papers, reports and undertakes reviews for national bodies. He has been with the Resuscitation Council UK paediatric group as a member from 1992 and was appointed as the Honorary Secretary of Resuscitation Council UK in 2019. Ian has been a European Resuscitation Council (ERC) Board member and co-chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee for Paediatric, authoring the European Resuscitation Guidelines from 2010 to 2025.
He acted as the International Liaison Council for Resuscitation co-chair for Paediatrics for 10 years, and sat on the Scientific Advisory Group, being elected as Vice Chair of the ILCOR Conflict of Interest Committee and taken over the Chair’s position in 2025. He has been a Visiting Professor to Queen Margaret Children’s Hospital in Perth, Australia, an Honorary Associate Professor in the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and Visiting Fellow to the Centre of Reviews and Dissemination, University of York. He was also the Registrar of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) 2012-2017. He was most recently (in August 2025) appointed as the Boon Wong Hock Visiting Professor to Singapore. He advises the Youth Justice Board on the management of children and young people in the Secure establishments in England and Wales. He enjoys cricket, opera and walking!

Resuscitation Practitioner and Lecturer 

Jane has been an adult and paediatric nurse for over 40 years, working both overseas and in the UK. She has been involved in resuscitation for over 20 years, specialising in paediatric resuscitation. She is passionate about teaching resuscitation courses and is a course director for EPALS ALS and GIC courses. Jane believes that healthcare professionals should have the opportunity to complete universally recognised RCUK courses that ensure the delivery of knowledgeable and safe clinical practice. As a member of the EPALS subcommittee she has the opportunity to collaborate with a multi-professional group of like minded individuals whose goal is to represent RCUK and maintain the standard of paediatric research based courses for all.

Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine

Dr Mae Johnson is a dually accredited Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Great Ormond Street (GOSH) for children. Navigating the complex intersection of critical care and operative medicine. She has been a member of the EPALS subcommittee since she was a trainee contributing to guidelines and paediatric resuscitation research.

Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine, Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Critical Care

Rupert is a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine at Milton Keynes University Hospital and an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Critical Care at Oxford University Hospitals. His subspecialty interests in addition to resuscitation include Paediatric Critical Care, Transfer & Retrieval Medicine, Medical Education, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound. He has been an active member of the EPALS subcommittee since 2023 and regularly instructs on EPALS, ALS, and GIC courses.

Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist, HEMS Doctor

Dr Thomas Breen is a consultant paediatric anaesthetist at St George’s Hospital major trauma centre in London. He has also worked for over a decade as a HEMS doctor with AAKSS the air ambulance charity covering SE England. He is a regular Medical Director and Instructor on EPALS courses and was fortunate enough to do so recently in the British Virgin Islands. Thomas is regularly exposed to adult and paediatric emergencies in his day job and appreciates the importance of maintaining currency and confidence in resuscitation.
