Vacancy: Senior Clinical Lead

Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) is seeking an experienced registered healthcare professional to join our Clinical and Service Development team as a Senior Clinical Lead. This is an opportunity to help shape nationally and internationally recognised resuscitation courses, clinical resources and national guidelines.

RCUK works to improve resuscitation practice and patient outcomes. We support healthcare professionals caring for patients of all ages across acute, community and out-of-hospital settings through our courses, guidance and educational resources.

Working closely with the Director, you will help lead our clinical team and bring a senior clinical perspective to the development of our work. You will have the opportunity to turn evidence and ideas into practical improvements in resuscitation education and care, helping RCUK respond to the changing needs of healthcare professionals and the communities they serve.

As a Senior Clinical Lead, you will be an expert clinical resource for RCUK and its stakeholders. You will advise NHS Trusts and Health Boards, healthcare organisations, course centres, instructors and partner organisations, as well as providing appropriate clinical guidance to members of the public, patients and their families.

The role offers the opportunity to broaden your strategic influence and senior leadership experience within RCUK. You will help shape organisational priorities and represent RCUK within national initiatives, working with key stakeholders across health and social care to improve resuscitation practice and education.

You will be a registered healthcare professional and current RCUK advanced course instructor, with substantial experience in resuscitation practice and clinical education.

We are looking for someone who combines sound clinical judgement with strong communication skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

You will join a small, committed team where your expertise, ideas and leadership can make a meaningful contribution.

What we can offer you

We offer a competitive salary, generous annual leave and opportunities for professional development. All staff benefit from flexible working hours, and supporting a balance between work and personal life is important to us.

For an informal conversation about the role, please contact Adam Benson-Clarke, Director of Clinical and Service Development, at adam.benson-clarke@resus.org.uk.

The Senior Clinical Lead (SCL) will work closely with the Director of Clinical and Service Development (DCSD), Clinical Leads and RCUK colleagues to deliver the Directorate’s agreed priorities.

Leadership and management

  • Provide delegated operational leadership within agreed responsibilities and authority, deputising for the DCSD on agreed clinical and operational matters and providing senior clinical cover during periods of absence or competing priorities.
  • Lead designated RCUK course portfolios, with responsibility for their ongoing delivery, development, quality and operational oversight.
  • Line manage the Clinical Leads, including objective setting, appraisal, professional development, performance, wellbeing and workload management.
  • Coordinate and prioritise CSD portfolio delivery, ensuring clear ownership, effective use of capacity and cross-cover.
  • Monitor delivery against agreed plans and priorities, using data and feedback to improve quality, effectiveness and sustainability; address risks and dependencies and escalate matters requiring DCSD decisions.
  • Support the DCSD in developing short, medium and long-term Directorate objectives and operational plans aligned with the vision.
  • Promote and role-model RCUK’s values and a culture of professionalism, collaboration, inclusion, accountability and continuous improvement.

Clinical governance, education and portfolio development

  • Provide senior clinical and educational oversight of RCUK courses, guidance, resources and other clinical content, ensuring these are evidence-based, current, consistent and quality assured. Identify clinical, educational and governance risks and areas for improvement, recommending and supporting appropriate action.
  • Lead and support the development, delivery and continuous improvement of evidence-based clinical education, course programmes and resources, working with Clinical Leads, the Lead Educators and other colleagues to meet the changing needs of learners and their organisations.
  • Critically evaluate emerging evidence, guidelines and educational standards with relevant subcommittees and guideline writing groups, assessing implications for RCUK guidance, education, courses and resources.

Stakeholder engagement, communication and policy

  • Represent RCUK at national and international events, meetings and external committees as required, providing a senior clinical perspective.
  • Build and maintain effective internal and external stakeholder relationships, including course centres, instructors, Course Directors, health and care organisations, commissioners, professional bodies, regulators and partners.
  • Support Clinical Leads in this work, resolving differing priorities or perspectives and promoting adoption and implementation of RCUK guidance, programmes and resources.
  • Provide senior clinical advice on RCUK guidance, education, standards and resources to RCUK teams and professional and public audiences, recognising the limits of personal expertise and drawing on relevant subcommittees and external experts where required.
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications and Engagement Directorate and other teams to ensure clinical information is accurate, appropriate and consistent, providing senior clinical review and sign-off within delegated authority.
  • Contribute to developing and implementing relevant clinical policies, organisational positions and standards.

Professional responsibilities

  • Observe RCUK policies, procedures and standards and relevant statutory and professional obligations, taking responsibility for health, safety, wellbeing, risk management and clinical governance appropriate to the role.
  • Maintain professional registration, competence and continuing professional development, and support colleagues’ development.
  • Undertake other duties reasonably requested by the line manager, consistent with the role’s nature and level of responsibility.
  • Work flexibly where required, including occasional evening or weekend work, travel and overnight stays associated with course delivery, meetings, conferences or other RCUK activities.

This job description reflects the post’s current duties and will be reviewed periodically. Duties may vary without changing their general character or level of responsibility. Such variations are routine and do not in themselves justify reconsidering the post’s grading.

We pride ourselves on our inclusive, friendly staff team, who use their compassion and expertise to support each other. Teamwork and partnership working is at the centre of our mission to save lives.

When you apply to a job with us, we aim to provide appropriate support every step of the way. Here are some of the ways we can support applicants and potential staff members:

  • Working location: We always seek to balance business needs with a flexible approach to working styles and preferences. We have adopted hybrid working arrangements, allowing staff to balance home and office working. The successful applicant will be required to come into the office for a minimum of 1 day per week. Reasonable adjustments will be made for the successful candidate where this is required.
  • Access to work: If you would like to make an Access to Work application for a grant to pay for support tailored to your individual needs, such as a support worker, adaptations to the equipment you use, special equipment, taxi fares to and from work if public transport is not accessible to you, we will support you in this process.
  • Alternative application processes: We are asking for CVs and covering letters so you can tell us how your skills and experience can support and add value to Resuscitation Council UK. However, if an alternative method of applying – such as sending us a video or audio clip about yourself – works better for you, we welcome your application. We want our applicants to shine, so we’re flexible to your needs.
  • Equity for all applicants: when we receive applications, those who shortlist candidates for each role will not have access to your name, age or date of birth. In addition, we ask you to submit a diversity monitoring form. We won’t use the information in the diversity monitoring forms during the recruitment process itself, but the information we receive will help us to understand whether our job advertisements are successfully attracting a diverse range of applicants.
